Looking at images of punk figures

Some images I will consider using or taking influence from.

Use of helvetica??

From the begining, I admired helvetica as a typeface and planned to use it as part of my typographic design within my coursework. I think it is a very effective typography within the design industry which is very versitile and simple. But since deciding to base my idea around a punk exhibition. I've decided that Helvetica won't be appropriate to the style and mood of the pieces I will be creating. Instead I will probably use something closer to the fonts that were used on the album and promotional work used by the Sex Pistols at the time of the release of 'Nevermind the Bollocks'.

After looking further into Saul Bass following discussion in  class, I researched further into his work, I really found the rough illustrations used effective and wanted to explore, using this myself so I created my own version of one of his graphic designs using Ilustrator.

Imagery to use in design

Final idea

After realising that this year is the 40th anniversary of the punk movement, and having looked in depth at significant graphic designers of this era such as Reid and Bubbles- I have decided to base my promotional pack on an exhibition celebrating 40 years of punk, which explores punk throughout this time period, with artwork, iconic photographs, costumes, album covers, and instruments from this era.

Despite preferring Barney Bubbles work in terms of graphic design and aesthetic, I feel that Reid's work is much more iconic when referring to punk as a movement. I will definitely take a lot of inspiration from Reid and will use acid colours and roughly outlined images. By taking most influence from Reid my target audience for the promotional package will probably identify most easily.

Initial idea post

For my commuication design portfolio I am thinking of keeping with the theme of film poster artwork or/and album cover artwork, with the focal point being on imagery and colour, for my Media and design Exhibition press and promotional pack.

I feel that this would work best for me, when considering the main elements which will make up this promotions package:

  • A printed poster with appropriate titles: date, location, (fictional) web address etc.
  • A web banner/Twitter/Facebook header.
  • A range of at least four badges or stickers.
  • A T-shirt with designs on front & back.
  • A five or more web page design layouts (non-interactive) for iPad/tablet.
  • Your research blog as a .pdf file.

I intend to research into the most iconic film and album artwork and digital design and use elements of this as inspiration and within this will hopefully find a visually pleasing theme which I can use throughout my work. I want there to be a clear link which is consistent throughout all pieces within the promo pack.
